Family

There's a lot of information about my family on the web. So I thought I'd organize some of it here. This is mainly for "long-lost" friends and family to find me and to get in touch :)

This is where I was born. I grew up in Sutton, Surrey (South London), attending Wallington High School for Boys. Since age 18 I've lived in Israel (Jerusalem), England (York and London), the U.S. (Boston, MA and Troy, NY), and Australia (Canberra). I did my undergrad degree at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, my masters at the London School of Economics, and my PhD at Boston University.

Here is the Stern family tree. There is also a link to the Goldschmidt family tree which goes back to the end of the 17th Century in the village of Oberlistingen in Hesse, Germany. The line goes forward through Meyer Goldschmidt. My other grandfather was born in 1889 in Forbes, NSW... he's also in the Goldschmidt family tree.

There are a couple of well-known German-Jewish Stern families in the New York area. One family who founded the Stern Brothers Department Stores came from the same village as us in Germany but they aren't recorded in our family tree. It's possible they are descended from a brother or uncle of Abraham Stern, but they might also not be close relatives. The Stern School of Business at NYU is named for Leonard Stern who is related to us. His father Max Stern founded the Hartz Mountain pet supply business.

Continuing the academic theme, Erika Fromm was my father's cousin. Her grandson, Michael Greenstone is an economics professor at MIT. So he's my second cousin once removed (I think that's the right description).

I'm a descendant of this guy too somehow or other :)

Some pictures of my ancestors. A couple of these pictures are included in a website on Jewish life in Hessen before the Holocaust developed by the Jewish Museum in Frankfurt.
